Mello-Yellow Breakfast Oats Porridge
or White Chocolate, Marshmallow & Raisin Oats Porridge
– JUMP TO RECIPE –
– PRINT RECIPE –
When Our Lady Anoia, fickle goddess of things stuck in drawers (and
waylaid utensils), lovingly clutch us to her hairy bosom, we turn to Mello-Yellow
Oats Porridge as a last resort. Little can go wrong in its procedure and you
have to be truly blessed by our Lady of Frustration and Vexation if you lose a
finger during the preparation of this palliative, or turn your stovetop into a
charred wasteland after everything boiled over when you looked away for 1.12129
seconds.
Back to reality:
There are mornings when you awake, rise and very quickly realise your
gut is breezily informing you all your day ahead has a significant risk of
descending into chaos and mayhem. Small little events give the Universe’s
intent away: slamming your thumb in your underwear drawer, misaligning your
shirt buttons and battling your stuck pants zipper for ten minutes. As all of
us over fifty know by now deep down in our collective souls: you never, ever
ignore your gut to instead blithely rely solely on the crystal purity of Logic
and Reason. The world does not operate in this manner and the Universe relishes
each end every opportunity to demonstrate the fallacy of this approach to you,
often in imaginative and emotionally challenging little situations.
Calmly appreciating a hefty bowl of smooth White Chocolate, Marshmallow
& Raisin Oat Porridge while Donovan blares out Mello-Yellow on the stereo
(and idly dreams of smoking dried banana peels), allows you to contemplate –
and girdle your loins – for the day ahead. Not that Anoia or the Universe will
let you be in peace. But at least tonight, hefty mug of instant hot chocolate in hand and mentally wading through the wreckage
of the day, you can quietly assure yourself that at the outset of this day, you
desperately tried to maintain order over
this day.
If, during the course of this preparation, you lose two fingers and sustain third degree burns, know then – favoured mortal – that you are a true beloved of the goddess. Then go hide under your bed for a week, petrified thumb in mouth and blanky over your head.
WHITE CHOCOLATE, MARSHMALLOW & RAISIN OAT PORRIDGE
– PRINT RECIPE –
Recipe yields: 2 Portions |
Preparation time: ± 5 Minutes |
Cooking time: 18 Minutes |
Difficulty level: Easy |
Special Equipment Required:
1
x Small sauce pan, cast iron or heavy-bottomed stainless steel.
Ingredients:
Rolled oats |
80ml |
Hot water |
350ml |
Brown sugar |
30ml |
Salt |
± 1.5 ml |
|
|
Dried raisins |
15ml |
Yellow sultanas |
15ml |
Sunflower seed |
15ml |
|
|
Mixed spice |
1.2ml |
White marshmallows, roughly
chopped |
2 |
White chocolate squares |
2 – 3 |
Method:
- Heat the hot water until boiling. Add the rolled oats, sugar and salt. Stir thoroughly. Once boiling, add the raisins, sultanas and sunflower seeds. Turn the heat down until the contents is gently simmering. Stir frequently.
- Place a spoon handle or bamboo skewer between the lid and saucepan to prevent the simmering oats from boiling over, which it will do if left to its own devices.
- Simmer for 18 minutes – longer if a mushier end result is desired. Stir regularly.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the mixed spice, chopped marshmallows and chocolate. Stir until molten and fully combined with the porridge.
- Allow to cool 10 – 12 minutes before serving.
- Serve with extra brown sugar and marshmallows for those with sweet teeth.
Comments:
- Use milk instead of water for a creamier end product. However, be aware that milk boils over in less than 1.121 seconds if you become distracted and look away inadvertently.
- If using milk instead of water, stir constantly once the oats and condiments have been added as milk takes only marginally longer to burn than it needs to boil over.
- Avoid using pink marshmallows in the porridge. The French cachou taste does not play well with mixed spice.
